The French left wing alliance the New Popular Front are the surprise victors in France’s snap parliamentary election.
In a blow to far-right leader Marine Le Pen, her National Rally is expected to come in third, and President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance in second.
French Far-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, who is part of the left-wing coalition, vowed to implement his high-spending program, refusing negotiation or cooperation with Macron.
National Rally’s party leader Jordan Bardella says the party will spend its time building on its success in the EU elections.
The euro opened lower in thinly traded session as markets start to digest the outcome.
In a statement, Macron’s office said he would wait until the formation of the new National Assembly was completed before making any decisions.
“In his role as guarantor of our institutions, the president will ensure that the sovereign choice of the French people is respected,” his office said.
