Organised Labour has suspended its indefinite strike action that had lasted 20 days after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nasarawa state government.
MoneyCentral reports that the organised labour in the state had embarked on an indefinite strike over welfare issues since June 15, 2021.
Announcing the suspension of the strike after signing the MoU with the government, Comrade Yusuf Iya, Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state said the strike was suspended with immediate effect.
He said in the agreement, the government has agreed to commence the implementation of over 10 years outstanding promotions of workers from August, 2021.
He added that the government has also agreed to pay the last tranche of August 2016 unpaid salaries immediately. He said the government has also agreed to withdraw their threat of ‘no-work-pay’ for the period the strike lasted in the interest of industrial harmony.
On the issue of the N30,000 minimum and consequential adjustments for workers in grade levels seven and above, the parties agreed to return to the negotiation table to finalise the discussion for onward implementation.
He noted that the parties also agreed that no worker would be victimized for participating in the strike action. The NLC boss in the state also thanked the traditional rulers for their intervention and thanked the government for their understanding by removing the contatoues clause that prolonged the strike.
The union Chairman therefore called on workers in the union affiliated to NLC and Trade Union (Congress) TUC to resume to their duty posts from Tuesday, July 6. Also speaking, Governor Abdullahi Sule expressed gratitude to the Traditional Council of Chiefs led by its Chairman, Sidi Bage, Emir of Lafia for their intervention towards amicable resolutions of strike
Governor Sule also lauded efforts of other stakeholders in the state for their intervention in the umpass between the government and organised labour. The governor also commended the officials of the organised labour for their maturity, adding that the government has also demonstrated maturity during the strike by not using excessive force to show that they are in charge.
The governor said the suggestions by the union on how to fund the implementation of what was agreed was highly appreciated.
He therefore appealed to workers to join hands with his administration to boost the Internally Generated Revenue of the state in order to sustain the state and ensure speedy development.
