If you are freelancer, artisan, trader or contractor who earns an irregular income, then you need budget basics that will help you save money for the rainy day.

Irregular income refers to earnings that fluctuate from month to month and doesn’t follow a predictable schedule.

There are indications that the preponderance of Nigerians have an irregular income and we are gradually tilting towards a technology and service based economy.

Many are poor because there isn’t anybody to advise them on how to operate on a slim budget even amid a challenging economic environment.

How to Budget with Irregular Income

  • Calculate your baseline income: Look at the past 6-12 months to determine the minimum, most consistent amount you can expect
  • Identify essential expenses: List fixed costs like rent, utilities, and groceries, which should be covered first regardless of income fluctuations;
  • Build a buffer or emergency fund: Save more during higher-income months to cover lower-income periods, aiming for three to six months of expenses in accessible savings;
  • Create multiple budgets: Some experts suggest having separate budgets for better months and leaner months to stay adaptable and avoid debt cycles;
  • Automate savings and track expenses: Use digital tools to automate transfers and track spending against your income variations.
