Manchester City get Premier League title boost as Cancelo signs new deal

Following a fine run in the 2021/2022 Premier League season, Manchester City have been handed a Premier League title boost as Portuguese full-back, Joao Cancelo has signed a new contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until summer 2027.

Cancelo has been one of the outstanding performers for Pep Guardiola’s champions over the last couple of years and has won accolades from Manchester City boss for his exemplary attitude in the aftermath of a horrific break-in at his home.

Cancelo previous contract is worth around £80,000 a week – was due to run until 2025, so he has been handed a two-year extension on improved terms that will see him earn more.

Cancelo who arrived from Juventus for £60 million in summer 2019 said,

“This new contract means I now have complete focus on improving my game and winning more trophies with this team.

“Manchester City players have everything they need to reach their full potential, with amazing facilities, world-class teammates and an incredible manager who pushes us every single day.

“There is nowhere better to play football and it’s a pleasure to work here. I have so much I want to achieve before my career ends, and Manchester City offers me the best chance of fulfilling my ambitions.”

Manchester City Director of football, Txiki Begiristain, said Cancelo, 27-year-old is the manager’s dream because of his versatility.

“Joao Cancelo is the ultimate professional. He loves football and applies himself every single day in a bid to become better.

“He sets high standards, and any young player should observe the way Joao applies himself if they want a blueprint for success.

“Not only does he have incredible talent, but he also displays perfect dedication to this sport. That’s why he can play so many games at such a high level.

“His consistency during the last two seasons has been amazing. He is so versatile. Whether he plays right-back, left-back or in midfield, he operates at the same high level.”
