Sanlam Allianz Life Insurance and Sanlam Allianz General Insurance have been awarded an operating license by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) after a successful consolidation of the two leading global insurers into a single unit.
The merger, approved by regulators earlier this year, brings together Sanlam’s extensive life assurance portfolio and Allianz’s general insurance expertise under the unified SanlamAllianz identity.
With the new licenses, both life and non-life insurance businesses are now set to operate as fully compliant entities under Nigeria’s insurance regulatory framework.
Of course, the business combination shows foreign investors’ confidence in the country’s insurance sector that is still in its embryonic or nascent stage as industry analysts say the move could trigger further consolidation in the sector while enhancing service delivery, innovation, and capital strength.
Analysts are sanguine that the new entity is going to deepen penetration through innovative products, tap into the retail end of the market into its fold.
Currently, Nigeria’s insurance market contributes less than 1 percent to the global market premiums and records a penetration rate of 0.40 percent.
This remains poor compared to other Sub-Saharan countries like South Africa (12.20 percent) and Namibia (7.10 percent).
Similarly, the sector struggles with a low insurance density of $7.00 compared to South Africa ($857.00) and Namibia ($335.00).
The merged entity is expected to leverage combined global expertise, technology, and local market knowledge to provide enhanced solutions across corporate, retail, and digital channels.
SanlamAllianz is now poised to play a more prominent role in Nigeria’s insurance landscape, helping to close the protection gap and drive growth in a largely underinsured economy.
